유럽 최대 규모의 드라마 및 TV 시리즈 산업 행사인 ‘시리즈 매니아 포럼(Series Mania Forum)’이 역사상 최초로 대한민국을 ‘주빈국(Country of Honor)’으로 선정했다.
미국 엔터테인먼트 전문 매체 버라이어티(Variety) 등 외신에 따르면, 시리즈 매니아 포럼 측은 글로벌 콘텐츠 발전에 기여한 한국의 공로를 인정해 올해 행사의 주인공으로 한국을 낙점했다. 이에 따라 오는 3월 24일부터 26일까지 프랑스 릴(Lille)에서 열리는 이번 포럼에는 한국콘텐츠진흥원을 필두로 채널A, CJ ENM, KBS미디어, MBC, SLL, 스튜디오 S 등 국내 주요 미디어 기업들이 고위급 대표단으로 참석한다.
시리즈 매니아 포럼의 총괄 디렉터 로렌즈 허치버그는 “한국은 영화와 영상 콘텐츠 분야에서 세계적으로 인정받는 창의성과 완성도를 갖추고 있다”며 주빈국 선정 이유를 밝혔다. 이번 행사는 75개국 5,000명 이상의 전문가와 10만 명 이상의 관객이 참여하는 세계적 규모로, 한국 콘텐츠가 단순한 ‘유행’을 넘어 글로벌 표준으로 자리 잡았음을 시사한다.
독일의 유력 일간지 제두위체 차이퉁(Süddeutsche Zeitung) 역시 “엔터테인먼트의 미래는 한국에 있다”는 헤드라인을 통해 한국의 문화적 위상을 높게 평가했다. 이 매체는 넷플릭스의 대규모 투자와 한국 콘텐츠의 장르적 다양성을 언급하며, 이제는 할리우드의 전유물이었던 ‘글로벌 브랜드 창출 능력’을 한국이 소유하게 되었다고 분석했다.
인도 등 아시아 시장에서의 영향력도 일상 깊숙이 침투한 것으로 나타났다. 인도의 T2 온라인은 한국의 뷰티, 패션, 식문화가 인도 젊은 층의 라이프스타일 전반을 바꾸고 있다고 보도했다. 특히 한국 드라마의 영향으로 인도인들의 연애관과 미적 기준까지 변화하고 있다는 점을 강조하며, 한류가 이제는 ‘삶의 방식’으로 정착했다고 평가했다.
전문가들은 이번 주빈국 선정이 한불 수교 140주년을 앞둔 시점에서 이루어진 만큼 양국 간 문화 협력 강화는 물론, 한국이 글로벌 문화 소프트파워 강국으로서 입지를 더욱 공고히 하는 계기가 될 것으로 전망하고 있다.
